Personal Watercraft Safety

Personal Watercraft Safety

All this month we are going to focus in on some safety tips when it comes to spending time outdoors around your home.

Personal watercraft has become synonymous with Jet Skis & SeaDoos, but encompasses other motorized watercraft not classified as boats such as water scooters, wetbikes, & the most-recent flyboards. With all sorts of ways to have fun on the water, it’s important to remember safety. DiscoverBoating has some tips for those who want to stay safe while riding on the water:

  • Wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket
  • Take a Boaters Safety Course
  • Know the local boating laws & regulations
  • Don’t operate vehicle after consuming drugs or alcohol
  • Don’t exceed the passenger limit as stated in the owner’s manual
  • Maintain your vehicle and check that everything is operational before going out

Pool Safely

 Pool Safely

All this month we are going to focus in on some safety tips when it comes to spending time outdoors around your home.

We’ve spoken previously about being safe at the beach, but what about the thousands out there that have a pool? Whether it’s an elaborate in-ground pool with attached grotto or a $10 Walmart special, pool safety is still important. The government has a website called PoolSafely which has a ton of resources on being a safe pool user & pool owner. They even have a fun game app for Android and iOS devices to teach the importance of pool safety. Here are just a few tips to keep you and yours safe when having fun in and around the pool!:

  • Always watch children, designate an adult to be a “Water Watcher” to keep tabs on everyone
  • Keep children away from drains, pipes, or other grates/openings
  • Know how to perform CPR and other life-saving measures
  • For smaller portable pools, empty & put them away after every use, cover larger pools and put access ladders away when adults are not present
  • Place your portable pool in a fenced area if at all possible

First Aid

First Aid

All this month we are going to focus in on some safety tips when it comes to spending time outdoors around your home.

This week, a blog article from CPR Certified & one from PetMD gives some first aid tips for both humans & animals during the summer months:

  • For minor burns, run cold water over them and apply a clean bandage loosely over the wound. DO NOT POP BLISTERS! Blisters form as a natural protectant.
  • For bee stings, use a fingernail or edge of a credit card to SCRAPE the stinger away & wash the area with soap/water and apply ointment if needed.
  • For ticks, use a pair of tweezers & gently tug at the body to dislodge it being careful not to separate the head. Wash with soap/water & treat with antiseptic. Monitor for 30 days for signs of Lyme Disease.
  • Keep pets indoors if at all possible when temperatures rise above 80 degrees, if you can’t, make sure there is enough shade & access to cool water.
  • Before taking your pet for a walk, test the sidewalk with your hand – if you cannot keep it on the surface for more than 10 seconds, don’t go for a walk or outfit your pet with booties to protect the pads of their feet.
  • Keep pool chemicals away from pets, chlorine and other such chemicals are toxic to both humans and pets.

BBQ Safety

BBQ Safety

All this month we are going to focus in on some safety tips when it comes to spending time outdoors around your home.

The State of Massachusetts has provided a blog post with some great tips when it comes to cooking outdoors during the summer months. According to the blog post, 2/3 of all fires in the state occur during the grilling season (May-September). Here are some tips gleaned from the post (be sure to check the post for more!):

  • When using a gas grill for the first time of the season, check the hoses & connections for gas leaks. Pouring a light soap/water solution through the hose should reveal if there are any pinholes in the hose. Replace as necessary.
  • Whether using a charcoal grill or gas grill, NEVER use them in an enclosed space. Both grills can generate a large amount of carbon dioxide gas which can poison you.
  • If you are going to use a grill on a balcony, make sure there is a stairway or other alternative fire escape.
  • Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from structures, deck railings, overhanging roof eaves & tree branches.
  • Keep your grill clean to prevent an uneven flame or blockage from grease/fat build-up.
  • Never use gasoline on any grill, fires caused by gasoline are major sources for burns.
