Wedding Bells

Wedding Bells

Celebrating your big day is important. The venue, the dress, the reception, each are pieces that help to bring the event to life. It’s also important to make sure you are properly covered to avoid any “rainmakers” to your day.

There are things to keep in mind when it comes to your personal liability:

  • Most home/condo/renters/mobile home policies include host liquor liability coverage BUT the limit may be capped or there are other restrictions.
  • Personal umbrella policies may help “fill in the gap” as far as liability gaps in your home & auto coverage, BUT it may exclude liquor liability.
  • Home/condo/renters/mobile home/personal umbrella policies do not allow for vendors/facilities to be added as an Additional Insured (to protect them from liability claims on your wedding day).

There is a solution, however, and that is to purchase a Wedding/Special Event policy. Most policies include coverage for:

  • General & Host Liquor Liability (some offer separate limits for each)
  • Product Liability (in case someone gets sick from the food/beverages served at the event)
  • Lost Deposit Coverage (for when vendors go bankrupt/close/or just don’t bother showing up)
  • Wedding Attire Coverage (in case the wedding dress/suit/tuxedo is damaged or stolen)
  • Photography/Videography Coverage (in case the photographer/videographer goes bankrupt/closes/a no-show or the photos/video are damaged)
  • Rehearsal Dinner/Breakfast Coverage
  • Wedding Gift Coverage
  • Special Jewelry Coverage

When looking online, do your research. Check the insurance company’s A.M. Best rating, make sure it is at least an A rating. Get a copy of the policy (if possible) and take note of the exclusions/restrictions/limitations.

Your big day is YOUR BIG DAY, do what you can to preserve the magic memory!

Back to School Considerations

Back to School Considerations

Just about everywhere school is back in session. With relieved parents, kids & teens are excited about the prospect of a new year in school. Today we look at some things to consider as far as insurance and your student.

  • Scheduling Items – Musical Instruments, Laptops, Desktops, Cameras, Tablets, & other expensive items/school-leased items might be good to schedule on your home/condo/renters/mobile home insurance. Oftentimes the cost to schedule is much less than the “insurance plan” offered by the school system and you can delete the items once they have been returned at the end of the school year.
  • College Dorm Coverage – Your home/condo/renters/mobile home policy does cover your child’s belongings while away at college as long as they are a “resident relative”. But there is a limitation of 10% of Coverage C or $1,000, whichever is greater. Inventory what your child is bringing to college and determine whether or not that coverage amount is adequate. If it isn’t, you might want to consider purchasing a renters policy for him or her.
  • Car Concerns – Most colleges across the country limit which class year may bring vehicles with them to college, or at least which¬† class year they allow to park on campus. Think about whether or not you will allow your child to take a vehicle with them to college. If the vehicle/insurance is in your name, you are the one responsible for anything that happens with that vehicle. Too many parents have learned the hard way and have paid dearly.
  • Good Grades – Some insurance carriers offer discounts for students under the age of 25 who maintain at least a B average. Others also offer discounts for students that have recently completed drivers education. There are requirements, check with your hometown insurance agent to see if your insurance carrier offers such discounts and what may be required.

Back to School Shopping

Back to School Shopping

Just about everywhere school is back in session. With relieved parents, kids & teens are excited about the prospect of a new year in school. We’ve compiled some tips from the Money Crashers blog & the Great Schools blog, & an article at Military.com to help you outfit your kids without going into serious debt.

  • Take Inventory – check the house and gather what items you already have on hand, making a list of those items missing or needed.
  • Make a Budget – have a preset amount you are spending on each child and stick with it. This is a great way to introduce kids to money & spending.
  • Coupons & Sales – take advantage of coupons and sales when it comes to school supplies. Avoid peak sales times of August & January, as these are times when prices may be higher.
  • Choose Quality – for certain items like shoes & backpacks, it’s best to go with the best quality you can afford. In the long run it will be less-costly than having to replace the item halfway through the school year.
  • Gently Used – purchasing used items such as books or calculators could potentially save you hundreds of dollars versus purchasing them new. On used electronics, purchase a warranty if possible.
  • Save Receipts – many stores have strict policies in regards to returns/exchanges that require the original receipt. Send a photocopy of the receipt in with rebates unless it specifically states the need for the original.
  • Plan Ahead – buy in bulk and at clearance sales to stock up for the following school year.
