Halloween Safety

Halloween Safety

It’s that time of year again, time for little ones to traverse neighborhoods & malls looking for frightfully sweet treats! Here are some tips to keep you and your trick or treaters safe this holiday from Consumer Reports!:

  • Buy flame-resistant costumes/masks/wigs (they should be clearly labeled as such)
  • Never walk near lit candles or luminaries while wearing costumes
  • Beware of face paint, much of what’s on the market isn’t FDA-approved. Test on a small area of skin first to see if there is any reaction & remove immediately afterwards.
  • Trick or treat in groups, never alone
  • Walk, don’t run from house to house & use sidewalks whenever possible
  • Only visit well-lit homes & don’t accept rides from strangers.

Here’s an article for helping your pets through the holiday and some additional tips if you have some special-needs trick or treaters.

Be safe & enjoy the holiday!

Pumpkin Carving Safety

Pumpkin Carving Safety

Well, it’s that time of year. A time to decorate for the fall, especially time to decorate for the Halloween holiday. Every year hundreds of adults & children end up in the emergency room for injuries sustained while carving Jack-O-Lanterns. Here are some tips to help keep you safe while preparing those pumpkins for their “ghoulish” facades from Consumer Reports:

  • Use the right tools – there are tool kits out there that are made specifically for carving pumpkins & gourds. If you plan on carving pumpkins every year, invest in a decent set of tools. The included tools are saws (for sawing the tough rinds), pokers, scrapers, & other tools that are smaller and easier to control.
  • Carve before cutting the top – For the most part pumpkins are hollow (aside from the seeds/goop inside) so carving them without the top cut off is easy. A hand surgeon explains our tendency to hold the pumpkin from the inside as we carve exposes us to greater risk of injury.
  • Taking precautions – carving a pumpkin should be a fun time and not a rush-job. Make sure your working area is clean/dry/well-lit and work slowly to avoid injury.
  • Adults supervision – The temptation is there to allow kids under the age of 14 carve their own pumpkins. This isn’t recommended, but if you choose to – DON’T leave them unattended while they carve and use tools suited for their hands.
  • First aid is foremost – knowing the basics of first aid (such as stopping bleeding) is important when an accident does occur while carving pumpkins.

Being safe & having fun during Halloween doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. You CAN have fun while being safe!

Fire Safety

Fire Safety

The 2nd week of October is generally considered “Fire Safety Week” here in the states. Today we shared some tips given by ServPro on how to be safe when it comes to fire:

  • Watch Your Cooking – Don’t walk away from the stove if you are frying/grilling/broiling & keep all children away from the stove/oven.
  • Give Space Heaters Space – Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.
  • Smoke Outside – If you absolutely have to smoke indoors, use a sturdy & deep ashtray, NEVER smoke in bed.
  • Keep Matches & Lighters Out of Reach – we discussed this on the previous podcast.
  • Inspect Electrical Cords – Replace cords that are damaged, cracked, or have broken/loose plugs.
  • Be Careful with Candles – Keep them at least 1 foot from anything that can burn, listen to last week’s podcast for more candle safety tips.
  • Have a Fire Escape Plan – Have a plan with at least 2 escape routes and practice it twice a year (think Daylight Savings Time).
  • Install/Test Smoke Alarms – Test alarms at least once a month and replace batteries once a year. Newer detectors have 10-year lithium batteries that don’t need replacing, so that is an option.

Candle & Potpourri Safety

Candle & Potpourri Safety

Fall signals the beginning of colder days/nights, & the want for the pleasing smells of potpourri and flickers of candles around your home. Yankee Candle has some excellent tips to keep your home safe while enjoying these seasonal decor items:

  • Remove ALL packaging – this would include any sales stickers or pieces of plastic that may remain on the items.
  • Placement importance – keep your candles & heated potpourri on heat-resistant surfaces and away from anything that can catch fire. Keep out of reach of children/pets.
  • Wick length – Keep wicks trimmed to 1/8 inch at all times
  • Smoking isn’t cool – If your candle is smoking, extinguish & relight it. If smoking continues, discontinue use.
  • Pooling wax – keep the wax pool in your candles free of debris/matches/wick trimmings to avoid a fire.
  • Never unattended – never leave candles/heated potpourri unattended.
  • Lighting utensils – keep all matches/lighters out of reach of children/pets

There are additional tips for specific candle/potpourri types on their website.

Be safe, enjoy the smells and sights of the season!
