Winterize Your Home

It’s that time of year, time to start clearing up the outside and inside of your home in preparation for the coming winter. We’ve gleaned tips for outdoor prep and indoor prep from a couple of sources this week!

The Moneycrashers blog shares these outdoor prep tips:

  • Drain your rain barrels – this should be done before the first frost to avoid damage to the barrels from the freezing/thawing water. Don’t waste the water, use it to water houseplants, outdoor plants, grass.
  • Clean your gutters – clogged gutters can cause ice dams with melting snow accumulating and being unable to drain away. Keep them clear of debris & look for trees that may need trimming while inspecting the gutters.
  • Trim your trees – take a walk around your property and note any trees/tree limbs that are dead/damaged/potentially pose a threat to power lines or your home in case of a bad storm. Call a reputable tree service if you don’t feel comfortable trimming them yourself.
  • Check your snow thrower/snow tools – the worst time to do this is after the first snowfall. Check the paddles/auger/spark plugs and replace as necessary. Toss broken snow shovels & consider an ergonomic shovel or snow pusher to save on back/knee pain.

Bob Vila shares some tips on his website when it comes to indoor preparation:

  • Flush your water heater – sediment can settle at the bottom of your water heater, use the drain valve at the bottom of the heater to flush out that sediment and make your water heater more efficient.
  • Run your fans clockwise – if you have ceiling fans, run them in a clockwise direction to push the warm air down to the floor.
  • Replace furnace filters – replacing filters every month can help with the efficiency and maintenance of your furnace. Stay away from the “90-day” or “6-month” filters.
  • Use Window Insulation – using the plastic film kits can save up to 70% on heating bills by preventing warm air from escaping.
