Winterize Your Ride

Preparing your vehicle for winter doesn’t have to be scary or difficult. Here are some tips we got from Bridgestone Tires, the NPR program “Car Talk”, & Edmunds:

  • Consider “winter” wipers – “winter” wiper blades are a bit heavier and are designed to push snow/ice away from the windshield. Don’t keep them on year-round, the additional weight of the blades will cause premature wear on the wiper motors.
  • Look into snow tires – these days most tires are considered “all-season” whereas there is no need to swap them out when winter hits. You might want to think about snow tires if you live in a rural area or part of the country where winters can be the worst for snow/ice. The compounds used in making the tires are resistant to temperature changes and help get a better grip on the road.
  • Keep your wiper fluid and gas tanks full – the less area for moisture to accumulate & freeze, the better. Use wiper fluid rated for below-freezing temperatures if needed.
  • Check the battery/belts/hoses – replace as necessary, with the colder temps  already-cracked hoses & belts can become brittle and fail in freezing temperatures.
  • Check the heating system & defrosters – verify that the front & rear defrosters work as well as the heating system. Nothing worse than trying to drive “blind” because your defroster stopped working.
