Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas tree fires result in upwards of $13 million in property damage each year. Whether you prefer a real tree or a beautiful fake one, here are some tips for both choices to keep you and your loved ones safe:

The American Christmas Tree Association has these tips for those who prefer real trees:

  • Choose the right tree – look for vibrant green needles that are difficult to pluck and does not shed its needles easily.
  • Keep away from heat – place your tree away from any heat source including candles, fire places, heating vents, radiators. Keep the reservoir filled to avoid the tree from prematurely drying out.
  • Use proper lights – make sure your lights are UL/ETL/ITSNA-listed & throw out any damaged strings of lights.
  • Turn off the lights – remember to turn your lights off before bedtime or leaving the house. Plug-in timers work well.

For those that would rather have a fake tree, here are some additional tips from Consumer Reports:

  • Buy “True” or “Real” trees – if you want the look/feel of a real tree, choose ones labeled “true” or “real feel”.
  • Choose “Hinged Branch” trees – these are trees that have branches permanently attached that fold up for storage. “Hooked branch” varieties are cheaper, but are a hassle to put up/take down & can branches can be easily lost.
  • Choose a sturdy base – choose a tree with a wide stand to support the weight of the tree and ornaments.
  • Pre-Lit Precautions – if you choose a pre-lit tree, make sure you get one with no-twist sockets and “Continuous On” or “Burn-Out Protection” so if one bulb burns out the entire tree remains lit.
  • Flame-Retardant – Make sure the tree is UL-listed and kept away from all heating sources.

  • Use only decorations/lights rated for outdoor use
  • Check all lights/wires for damage and replace as necessary
  • Fasten lights & decorations securely, use clips or other fasteners – DON’T hammer/staple directly into the wires
  • Use no more than 3 strands per extension cord
