Easter Green

Easter Green

This week we will be sharing some tips when it comes to the time-honored tradition of decorating Easter eggs! This article from the blogging site The Spruce shares a dozen tips to make sure you are safe while preparing the eggs:

  • Keep It Clean – make sure work surfaces, utensils, & the eggs themselves are clean to avoid contamination.
  • Use Two Sets – Use one set for the Easter egg hunt (or use plastic eggs) and one for eating.
  • Keep Them Refrigerated – keep the hard boiled eggs in the fridge until you are ready to decorate.
  • 2 Hour Window – don’t let anyone consume eggs that have been sitting out for longer than 2 hours to avoid possible illness.
  • Use Pasteurized Shelled Eggs – many people like to “blow out” their eggs (pricking both ends of the eggshell and blowing the contents out the other end) before decorating. unpasteurized eggs may contain salmonella, if pasturized aren’t available then wash the egg in hot water and rinse in a solution of bleach & cold water (1 teaspoon per 1/2 cup of water)
  • Use Raw Eggs – after blowing out the eggs, if you plan to use the contents – do it right away, don’t wait!

There are a few more tips available on the article from The Spruce, so be sure to check it out! We hope you and yours have a happy & safe Easter & Passover holiday!

Saving Green

Saving Green

All this month we’re looking at “green” topics to cover and this week is no exception! This week we discussed some items out of an article from Wallet Hub about tax-filing tips for 2018!

1 – Beware of Scammers. Identity fraud is a serious issue nowadays, we recommend purchasing the Identity Fraud Endorsement from your home insurance carrier. It’s inexpensive (less expensive than the 24/7 credit monitoring), but only comes into play when an identity theft event has occurred.

2 – Have All Requisite Paperwork. companies are required to send out 1099’s to persons for amounts of $600 or more. This doesn’t exempt income amounts of less than $600 from taxes. Make sure you have all your documents organized.

3 – Seek Free Advice. Check with your local county/township/city to see if there are free tax advice programs available. Local senior centers or libraries may also be sources for free tax advice programs.

4 – Use Reliable Tax Software. Check the reviews, look at the features before jumping right in. Find the software that is both secure and fits your particular situation.

We highly recommend checking out the rest of the tax tips found on Wallet Hub’s article!

Planting Green

Planting Green

All this month we will be discussing ways to “go green”, “grow green”, & even “save green”!

Where else to ask about gardening than Better Homes and Gardens! If you’re thinking about adding gardening to your plan for a “greener” lifestyle, BHG has some tips for you:

1 – Have an idea. What do you want to plant? An herb garden? A vegetable garden? Flowers? They suggest starting small rather than fail big…

2 – Pick a place. Almost all veggies & most flowers need 6 hours of full sun each day.

3 – Clear the ground. Obviously you need a clear/clean space to plant.

4 – Improve the soil. Add compost & other nutrients to the soil prior to planting.

5 – Dig or Don’t. The soil should be wet enough to form a ball but dry enough to fall apart.

6  – Pick your plants. Pick plants that you like and can handle your area’s climate.

Visit the article on Better Homes and Gardens for more tips on gardening. Happy Planting!
