Winter Weather Advisory, Watch, & Warning

Most of the country survived “Polar Vortex 2019” last week that brought below zero temperatures to areas of the country that rarely see such temperatures. Besides the state of emergency declared in several states, the National Weather Service has issued various warnings in regards to weather conditions. Today we spoke about the differences between an advisory, a watch, & a warning. You can get more information from the National Weather Services website about other weather-related warnings as well!

Winter Weather Advisory

– Issued for any amount of freezing rain, or when 2 – 4 inches of snow (alone or in addition to sleet/freezing rain) is expected to cause a significant inconvenience but not serious enough for a warning.

– Each state county has additional criteria that may require a Winter Weather Advisory, usually if it is going to impact rush hour traffic.

Winter Storm Watch

  • Issued when a potential for significant/hazardous winter weather within 48 hours. This indicates a “possibility” for hazardous conditions, not that there is a certainty.
  • 5 inches or more of snow/sleet within 12 hours or 7 inches or more of snow/sleet within 24 hours
  • Life-threatening conditions with wind/snow/sleet or enough ice to cause damage to trees/power lines
  • Each state county has additional criteria that may require a Winter Storm Watch, usually if it is going to seriously impact rush hour traffic.

Winter Storm Warning

  • Issued when a significant combination of hazardous weather is occurring/imminent
  • Same criteria as a Winter Weather Watch
  • Each state county has additional criteria that may require a Winter Storm Warning, usually if it is going to impact rush hour traffic.

We encourage you to check out the National Weather Service’s definitions page for more information on the various weather advisories/warnings/watches criteria!
