Thanksgiving Safety Tips

The US Fire administration claims that more than 4,000 fires happen each Thanksgiving Day. In order to help you avoid being one of the statistics, we found this article from Atlantic Training with tips on keep you and your loved ones safe while feasting at Thanksgiving.

– Never leave food unattended & if deep-frying, keep the fryer outside and away from walls & free from moisture

– Avoid fresh, stuffed turkeys. Buy your turkey a few days before you cook it and keep it in the fridge. If you happen upon a deal that is a week or so before, put the turkey in the freezer

– Properly defrost your turkey by keeping it in the fridge (every 4lbs needs 1 day to thaw), submerge turkey in cold water being sure to change the water every 30min, or use a microwave safe dish and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for thawing.

– Don’t pre-stuff your turkey, cook the stuffing/dressing separately to cut down on food poisoning.

– Leftovers can be safely eaten (if put away properly) for up to 3 days in the fridge. Or they can be frozen (if able to be frozen).

Winter Wellness Tips

Winter is here. With predictions of bitter cold and lots of snow, the struggle to stay healthy is even more important. We found an article from My Southern Health with tips on how to stay healthy during the winter cold & flu season:
– Wash Your Hands! It may seem obvious, but wash your hands before eating/handling food, after using the restroom, & especially after being out in public.

– Lower Your Stress. With the holiday season coinciding with cold & flu season, stress can reduce your body’s ability to fight infection. Take a break when you feel stressed, listen to some soothing music or meditate. Be sure to get plenty of sleep as well.

– Dress in Layers. Layering helps to keep you warm but also allows you to shed layers as the temperatures rise to avoid dehydration or heat stroke.

– Don’t Smoke. Smokers have a greater health risk because of tobacco use, & smoking can cause additional issues when dealing with colds & winter respiratory infections.

– Remain Active. Many people slow down during the winter because of the cold & snow outside. Take a stroll around a big box store, pop in an exercise DVD, do something to keep you active.
Be sure to check out the full article at My Southern Health for more tips on keeping healthy & safe during the winter months.

Winter Car Prep

We don’t know where you live but winter is here in the Midwest. Some areas are reporting massive amounts of snow and that means it’s time to make sure your vehicle is prepared. We found an article from the NHTSA with tips not only for being safe on the road, but it also offers tips on how to prepare your vehicle for winter:

– Check the Battery. Make sure your battery is charging properly. Check the belts & cables to ensure they are working properly. Replace as necessary.

– Check those Lights. Make sure your headlights, taillights, turn signals, parking lights, & interior lights are in good working order.

– Check the Coolant. Make sure your coolant system is in good working order with no leaks. The coolant should be replaced according to the schedule in your owners manual. Be sure to use the right coolant mix for your vehicle & climate.

– Check the Windshield. Make sure your windshield is free of cracks/chips and replace as necessary. Check the front & rear defrosters to make sure they are in working order. Use de-icing windshield fluid and replace the wiper blades if they look worn/damaged/cracked.

– Check the Tires. Make sure the tread on your tires is within the guidelines in your owners manual and replace them if the tread is worn or damaged. Maintain proper tire pressure, going by your owners manual or the sticker on the door frame – DO NOT go by the pressure indicated on the tire itself!
